Electric vehicle fires

EV fires are the reason we carry FCL-X

An EV battery in thermal runaway keeps making its own heat and can reignite hours after the flames are knocked down. Industry figures cited by FCL-X put an EV fire at up to 40,000 gallons of water and four to eight hours on scene. FCL-X goes into the pack with the water and works on the reaction itself.

No reignition

Controlled burns of a Nissan Leaf and a Kia EV9, run with Georgia fire departments, ended with no reignition.

Goes in the tank you already have

Who it’s for

What is FCL-X?

FCL-X is a water-based, PFAS-free fire-extinguishing agent built for one job: lithium-ion battery fires. It goes into the battery with the water, cools it fast, neutralizes toxic gases, and helps keep it from reigniting.

Watch the video to see how FCL-X works on the toxic gases a battery fire produces. FCL-X products are made in the USA.

Why it works

Five Ways FCL-X Works on a Battery Fire

A battery in thermal runaway generates its own heat, releases hazardous gases, and can reignite after the flames are out. FCL-X is designed to address each of those risks.

Gets inside the battery

FCL-X soaks into the battery structure and reaches cells in thermal runaway, helping stop the chain reaction before it spreads to the next cell.

Cools fast

As a water-based agent, FCL-X pulls heat out quickly. Lower temperatures slow the reaction, contain the spread, and give responders control.

Neutralizes hydrogen fluoride

Battery fires release toxic gases, including hydrogen fluoride. FCL-X reacts with them to form non-hazardous salts, reducing the danger on scene.

Suppresses hydrogen gas

FCL-X slows the lithium oxidation that feeds the fire and generates flammable hydrogen, limiting gas buildup and the risk of secondary explosions.

Prevents reignition

A battery can reignite minutes or hours after the flames are out. FCL-X leaves a protective barrier that helps keep the battery stable.

Enclosed storage

Indoors, the Gas Is the Danger

In a parking garage, battery room, or warehouse, a lithium-ion fire’s gases have nowhere to go. Toxic hydrogen fluoride builds up where responders have to work, and flammable hydrogen collects until it can ignite.

FCL-X goes after the gases at the source. According to FCL-X, it converts hydrogen fluoride into non-hazardous salts and suppresses the hydrogen that builds toward an explosion.

Protect an Enclosed Site

Hydrogen fluoride

Toxic and corrosive. Converted into non-hazardous salts.

Hydrogen gas

Flammable and explosive when it collects. Generation suppressed at the source.

Where it matters most

Parking garages, fleet depots, battery storage rooms, warehouses, and e-bike storage.

FCL-X works alongside, not in place of, the ventilation, gas detection, and explosion protection an enclosed battery site requires.

How it compares

FCL-X vs. the Usual Options

Water, foam, aggregates, and blankets all have a place. Here’s where FCL-X is different on a lithium-ion battery fire.

FCL-X 2.5 Gallon / 9 Liter Extinguisher

The primary commercial format: a stored-pressure, hose-equipped extinguisher holding 2.5 gallons of water-based FCL-X solution, labeled for industrial use.

  • Aim at the origin of the flame or smoke and target the ruptured area of the cell
  • Inspect monthly; install, inspect, and maintain per the owner’s manual and NFPA 10
  • Protect from freezing

Recharging this unit

After use, the extinguisher is returned to service with an FCL-X recharge kit: one package of FCL-X agent mixed with water in the cylinder. Recharge and pressurize per the owner’s manual and NFPA 10.

Service companies refilling in volume can use FCL-X ReCharge 275, a premixed tote that refills up to 110 of these units.

Pro Max and FD Concentrates

FCL-X Pro Max and FCL-X FD are concentrates batch-mixed into water for use in tanks, pumps, and hose lines, with no special mixing equipment. Pro Max is intended for industrial environments and large-scale mitigation; each 5-gallon kit treats up to 500 gallons of water.

FCL-X FD is formulated exclusively for fire departments. It is added to apparatus tank water only: start tank recirculation at max flow, remove the lid, and empty the container into the tank. Each container makes 500 gallons of water-agent. Store between 23°F and 120°F (-5°C to 49°C).
